Remote Access

How to access our computer systems from outside the Linux Lab

You can access your files and all of our software on the linux cluster through turing.slu.edu using one of several methods

Note: Although a connection to turing.slu.edu should be used for most access, individual lab machines can be accessed using the addresses linuxlab1.slu.edu through linuxlab14.slu.edu.

Secure Shell (SSH)

Provides text only shell access that works well over slow internet connections.  The connection is fully encrypted for privacy.

Windows:
PuTTY is a free SSH client for Windows and can be downloaded at http://www.putty.org.  It is already installed on all of SLU's windows laboratories and classrooms.
Macintosh or Linux:
An SSH client is included with every Mac and Linux system.  Start up a terminal window and type ssh USER@turing.slu.edu where USER is your username.

NX Client

NX provides graphical login to the Linux desktop.  This desktop environment is identical to the one in the Linux Lab.  The client software is available in Ritter Hall 225 and 316 and in other computer classrooms on campus.  The client software is free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.  You can download it and install it on your own computer, see http://www.nomachine.com for more information.

Once installed, you should configure a connection to host turing.slu.edu using port 22.

Note:  network connections are subject to the restrictions of your Internet Service Provider as well as any local Firewall software on your machine.  In some cases, this may result in traffic on port 22 being blocked, making both ssh and NX connections to turing impossible.
