Textbook

Notes on textbook options in mathematics.

This (Fall 2009) semester, in several lower division math courses, students will have an option of getting an electronic copy of the textbook.  This page explains some of the options available to students.

MyMathLab courses (Math 112, 114, and 120)

For these courses you need access to MyMathLab, an online homework and tutorial system.  You also need the textbook. 

 There are several ways of getting the textbook:

• A complete version of the textbook is available online as part of MyMathLab.  If you choose this option you will need to bring a wireless enabled laptop to class with you.
• A new hard cover book with a MyMathLab access code shrink wrapped with the book.
• A used hard cover book.  In this case you need the access code separately.
• A new loose leaf version of the book with MyMathLab shrink wrapped with the book.  This is cheaper up front, but you probably cannot resell the book.

Survey of Calculus (Math 132)

The text for this course is Calculus for Business, Economics, Life Sciences & Social Sciences, 11/E by Barnett,  Ziegler, and Byleen, and published by Pearson.

 There are several ways of getting the textbook:

• A complete version of the textbook is available online as part of MyMathLab.  If you choose this option you will need to bring a wireless enabled laptop to class with you.  (You can simply get a MyMathLab access kit even though we will not use MyMathLab for doing homework in this course this semester.)
  
• A new or used hard cover book.
• A new loose leaf version of the book.  This is cheaper up front, but you probably cannot resell the book.

Calculus (MATH 142, 143, and 244)

The text we use for these three courses is titled “Calculus” by Hughes-Hallet, McCallum, et. al and published by Wiley.  Students who only plan to take Calculus I and Calculus II can buy a smaller single variable version of the book.  Students who plan to take only Calculus III can get the smaller multivariable portion of the book.  If students are planning to take all three semesters, or Calculus II, and Calculus III they should get the larger Single and Multivariable version.

We are also bringing out a new edition. 
Students starting Calculus I need the 5th edition of the book.  Theses students will have to get a new book. 
For Calculus II and III we are using the 4th edition.  (Students who buy a book for a multi-semester course should be able to keep using the book they bought.)  These students will need to buy a used book.
Calculus II will start using the 5th edition in spring 2010 and Calculus III will start using the  5th edition in fall 2010.  

The publisher also gives the option of getting the textbook in hardback, paperback, and looseleaf versions.  Looseleaf is cheapest, but you probably will not be able to resell it.)

Math 142- Calculus I

You need the 5th edition, which is new.
